Fiche is an anniversary celebrated by the Sidama people as a New Year event. According to socio-cultural heritages handed down by forefathers through generations to descendants (current generation). Sidama New Year (Fiche Chamballala) anniversary has been celebrated for more than 2000 years. Basis for such unique local New Year’s Day determination and celebration is Sidama calendar which was an outcome of unreserved and relentless innovative efforts of selected knowledgeable and highly respected group of people who were actively involved in profound study of the solar system among which the moon, earth, sun and stars included.

Day 1: Arrival and City tour of Addis Ababa.
Upon arrival at Bole International Airport you will be met by our representative and transfer to Hotel. After check-into the hotel, you will have the opportunity to visit the most interesting place of the city, such us: the National Archaeological Museum, to view the 3.6 million year old remains of “Lucy”, whose skeleton was discovered in 1974. Continue to the Ethnological Museum at Addis Ababa University; a great insight into the many different peoples of Ethiopia and their respective cultures.

Day 2: Drive from Addis to Awassa.
Drive from Addis Ababa to Hawassa via Ethiopian Rift Valley. En route you will visit Lake Zeway, 160 kms south of Addis Ababa, the northernmost and largest lake in the chain which extends over 434 sq. kms. Its extensive aquatic vegetation attracts variety water birds. Late in the afternoon admire the sunset over Lake Hawassa.

Day 3: Full day in Awassa to Attend Fichee-Chembelala
After early breakfast you will attend Fichee chembelala. Fichee-Chambalaalla is a New Year festival celebrated among the Sidama people. According to the oral tradition, Fichee commemorates a Sidama woman who visited her parents and relatives once a year after her marriage, bringing ''buurisame'', a meal prepared from false banana, milk and butter, which was shared with neighbours. Fichee has since become a unifying symbol of the Sidama people. Each year, astrologers determine the correct date for the festival, which is then announced to the clans. Communal events take place throughout the festival, including traditional songs and dances. Every member participates irrespective of age, gender and social status.

Day 4: Full day in Awassa to Attend Chembelala
Morning visit the daily local fish market at the shore of Lake Awassa. This market will give you an experience where local people enjoy different variety of fish cuisines including the Ethiopian version “Sushi”. Here, a lot of aquatic birds can be spotted. Transfer to the airport and fly back to Addis Ababa.

In the evening attend a folkloric dinner where you will have a chance to taste several national dishes and watch dances of the various ethnic groups of Ethiopia. The traditional coffee ceremony will also be served. Later you will be transferred to the airport for your departure.
